Using the Dictionary Tools

 

When you look up a word in the dictionary, you'll see a series of round buttons in the right-hand column.  These buttons allow you to:

  • Start learning it now - Click this button to add any word to your learning program.  Once you click the button, it will be replaced with a view of your progress towards mastering the word. You'll also see the priority level the word has been given.
  • Add to List... - Add this word to a new or pre-existing vocabulary list of words to learn or save for later.
  • Thesaurus - Launch the Visual Thesaurus on this word.  Clicking on the launch button opens a new window which gives you a visual map of the word and its synonyms. The Visual Thesaurus is an interactive dictionary and thesaurus which creates word maps that blossom with meanings and branch to related words. Its innovative display encourages exploration and learning. You'll understand language in a powerful new way. By seeing how a word relates to its synonyms, you can help cement the meaning in your mind.  The Visual Thesaurus is an excellent companion site along with Vocabulary.com to improve your vocabulary. It requires a subscription, but you can try it out from any word on vocabulary.com and explore. If you like it, consider subscribing, and you’ll be able to look up as many words as you want.
  • Share It - Click the "Share It" button to share this word on your favorite social media site, or to email a word's definition to a friend or colleague.
